On the third Sunday in July 1800, a few faithful followers of Christ met on a canebrake at Spirit Creek, 10 ½ miles South of Augusta, Georgia and organized the Spirit Creek Baptist Church. Fearful of disturbing their masters at a time when religious freedom for slaves was non-existent, these few followers of Christ had to choose the seclusion of a canebrake to organize and worship their God. They chose as their first leader and pastor the Rev. J.W Sutton. When it was time to select a secretary for the group, there was no one who could read or write. As a result, Mr. Benjamin Rachel, a white man, was chosen as the first clerk of the Spirit Creek Baptist Church.
The current church was constructed in 2010 and dedicated June 26, 2011. Our current emphasis is on Church Education and development. The aim of this teaching ministry of the Historic Spirit Creek Baptist Church is to equip the people of God with sound spiritual truth that will lead to a soul saving salvation through Jesus Christ. This is the heart and focus of Pastor Godbee and this ministry. Winning souls for the Kingdom of God as stated in the Great Commission given by our Lord in Matthew 28:18-20, "And Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go you therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." Amen.
